End of Month Post – March 2019
There was a ton of things completed in March that I am super happy with. I’m happy with the overall finish, the end result, and I suppose the fact that I even did them. I can look back and say “Yeah, I did these,” but of course when I do, I’ll be thinking “This is wrong.” What’s funny is that despite what I said last month about “inking” in general, and how I shouldn’t think about lineart like that, I’m currently working on something that ends up using the same concepts. Part of it is actually featured in the image above. That image is of Kalta, one of the furry characters I’ve made up in the time learning art stuff for the past year, and the idea behind that particular piece is that I would try to work on something off to the side monthly. Now, I say “monthly,” but what I really mean is “something off on the side, under the guise of a monthly completion,” heh. It’s a way to make content people might actually care about, instead of “texture square practice #17” or something.
Among texture practices, there is of course all the sketches and sketching that gets done. I’ve done quite a lot of character sketches with varying levels of sketchy-ness, to the point where it actually bothered me a bit. I actually went around asking other people / artists about their thoughts on “what a sketch is” and of course, that answered varied from person to person. I wish there was a better way to explain it all but in general, a sketch is just whatever you decide. It’s up in the air on what level a detail a sketch can get, and unfortunately it bothers me a bit. Sometimes I want to go and clean things up a bit, but of course that takes up more time and somewhat shifts what I was going for in the first place. It has also become abundantly clear that I REALLY need to get some more figure drawing and perspective practice in.
So my “plans” for April are:
- Ignore April Fool’s like usual
- Redo the lineart on the Kalta piece
- See about throwing my list of “personal Projects” into a wheel picker when I don’t really have anything else to work on. (You can follow it on my Trello page (NSFW))
- Be better about streaming than I already am.
- See about getting comments section to work on the website. Maybe.
- More human practice / characters?
- Not sure why, but I feel like it’s possible that next year I can really start working on comics. I don’t know what I’m basing this thought on tho.
